Choose a virtual review sequence deliberately
mpv's EDL documentation describes combining source ranges into a virtual timeline. This is useful for reviewing several portions of media you own without first rendering a new movie. It is a playback arrangement that depends on the source files, not a self-contained export that can be sent in place of those files.
Prepare a manifest containing the source path, intended start, intended duration and reason for each segment. Use a small local set with simple filenames at first. Keep the originals unchanged and include only material you may use. Avoid remote or protected service inputs; this guide neither establishes access rights nor provides a route around content protection.
Write one segment before combining several
Read the EDL syntax for the installed mpv release. The official source describes a version header and source/start/length segment fields, with strict syntax and documented escaping rules. Format version zero is not presented as a frozen interchange standard, so keep the mpv version with the sequence.
For an authored example, a presentation rehearsal may need twelve seconds beginning eight seconds into one owned clip, followed by ten seconds beginning twenty seconds into another. Record those numbers in the manifest first. For simple local names, an original example uses the required header # mpv EDL v0 followed by separate lines take-a.mkv,8,12 and take-b.mkv,20,10. Check the first segment locally before adding the second. If a filename contains separators or unusual characters, use the documented escaping rather than improvising a comma-separated line that changes the field boundaries.
Review each join as an acceptance point
Watch the beginning and end of every proposed segment on the actual installation if you use the workflow. Compare the visual action and audio phrase with the manifest. A duration that is mathematically plausible may still end in the middle of a sentence or omit the visual cue that made the excerpt useful.
Then review transitions between sources and seek through the combined timeline. Note any discontinuity and the exact source and segment involved. These are checks to perform, not claims of frame-accurate behaviour or results measured for this article. A successful opening segment does not establish that all later source paths, codecs and boundaries are equally suitable.
Package the review instructions without overstating portability
Keep the EDL, manifest and source-location notes together. If another person needs to review it, confirm that they have both permission to receive the media and the required source files in the documented arrangement. A small EDL file does not contain the audiovisual bytes it references.
When the requirement is a portable finished video, choose an editing/export workflow that explicitly produces that deliverable and verify it separately. Do not present the virtual sequence as an encoded master or assume that every media player understands mpv's format. The completed EDL task is a reproducible local review timeline with deliberate segments and known dependencies.
Questions answered
Does an EDL file contain the clips themselves?
No. It references source ranges, so those media files and usable paths remain dependencies.
Is mpv EDL a stable universal editing interchange format?
The developer documentation describes version-zero syntax that is not frozen. Record the mpv version and check the receiving workflow.
