OBS Replay Buffer: keep a useful moment from your own demonstration

Prepare an OBS Replay Buffer workflow that captures a recent authorized demonstration and produces a discoverable saved clip.

A player organises the experience

Choose a moment worth retaining

Replay capture is useful when a short event happens unpredictably during a demonstration you are entitled to record. Begin by deciding what the saved excerpt must contain: perhaps the explanation before a menu action and the visible result after it. A highlight containing only the last frame may not explain the action to another person.

Write a realistic interval for the task rather than selecting the longest duration available. Longer retained history can have resource consequences, while a very short interval may lose the explanation. Use the installed version’s available buffer controls and available computer resources; there is no universal memory or quality setting suitable for every machine.

Separate preparation from the save command

OBS’s overview documents enabling Replay Buffer and assigning a save hotkey. The recording output guide also describes replay-specific filename prefixes and suffixes. Treat those as parts of a capture route: start the buffer, perform the demonstration, invoke save, then locate and inspect the output.

Choose a hotkey that does not already perform an important action in the software being demonstrated. Keep the destination understandable and make filenames distinguishable from ordinary recordings. If the operator is sharing a keyboard with another application, rehearsal should include where keyboard focus is when the save action is needed.

Rehearse with recognizable content

Use a harmless sample demonstration and say a short phrase immediately before the visible action. After the intended save, inspect whether that phrase and action appear together. This provides stronger evidence than merely finding a newly created file with a plausible size.

Repeat once after another ordinary action so you can recognize which saved clip is which. Record the observed beginning, ending and destination. If the file starts too late, reconsider the required retained history. If no file appears, investigate the buffer and save stages before changing the camera or source layout.

Keep a completion and privacy check

Review the entire saved excerpt before sharing it. The retained interval may contain activity that preceded the interesting moment, including private titles, desktop notifications or unapproved media. The ability to capture recent activity does not grant rights to redistribute it.

Keep the selected excerpt with a short note describing its source and purpose. End the buffer when the session is over if continued capture is unnecessary, and confirm the ordinary workflow has returned to its intended state. This guide does not claim a replay was captured, that a particular computer has enough memory, or that a saved highlight contains a complete broadcast.

Questions answered

Does starting the buffer prove that a clip was saved?

No. The save action and the resulting file need their own check.

What should a rehearsal contain?

An identifiable lead-in, the actual demonstration action and its visible result, so the saved interval can be judged.
