Define the visible defect in the actual scene
Begin with a specific need: unwanted edge content, a washed-out teaching diagram, or a foreground that must be less opaque. These are different problems. Keep the original file intact and use a representative passage containing both bright and dark detail, small text and motion where relevant.
Write one acceptance statement before changing controls. For an authored example, a demonstration might need the left margin removed while preserving a caption near the bottom. A result that looks tidier but cuts off that caption fails the task. Avoid promising to restore detail that is absent from the source.
Choose a control with the right scope
OBS describes Color Correction as changing the rendered source without editing the source file. Its Crop/Pad filter affects the base source across scenes; scene-item transform cropping has a different scope. Inspect where the intended correction should apply before adding a filter.
If only one composition needs a tighter framing, a source-wide change may be unnecessarily broad. If the same unwanted edge appears in every use of a source, a common correction may be appropriate. Record the choice in terms of the scenes it should affect, not simply as a set of numbers.
Change one property and inspect the consequence
Start with one small correction and compare the same passage. Preserve the starting value and note the effect on the acceptance statement. For colour changes, inspect more than one image region; an adjustment that helps a dark corner can lose information in a bright area.
For cropping, check every important edge and any text that moves during the clip. Revisit another scene using the source before accepting a shared filter. This checks actual scope rather than assuming that a satisfactory current preview means the rest of the presentation is unchanged.
Approve the recorded result and keep a rollback
Make a short output containing the representative passage and reopen it. Judge the correction at the intended viewing size. A magnified operator preview can exaggerate a defect or hide the effect of the final layout. Retain the original values or an unmodified collection until the output is accepted.
Keep only corrections with a clear purpose. If the result becomes hard to explain, return to the starting point instead of adding another compensating filter. This is an authored comparison method based on documented controls; no footage, image-quality measurement or OBS recording was tested here.
Questions answered
Does a source filter rewrite the original video file?
The documented correction changes the rendered source. A separately saved recording is a new output to inspect.
Why did another scene’s crop change too?
The Crop/Pad filter is attached to the base source and can affect its uses in other scenes.
