OBS Virtual Camera: choose the image the receiving app should get

Select Program, Preview, a fixed scene or a source for OBS Virtual Camera, then verify the receiving application.

A player organises the experience

Start from the receiving application

Virtual Camera is an image route into another application that accepts a camera input. Decide what that application should receive: the whole produced presentation, one stable teaching scene or a single visual source. Use your own material and confirm that the receiving session is a suitable place to present it.

Write down the chosen receiver and its selected camera. A correctly composed OBS screen does not establish which camera another app uses. If the receiver still selects a physical webcam, changing scenes in OBS will not explain its picture. Begin with a visible rehearsal label so the intended route can be recognized immediately.

Choose the output policy explicitly

OBS documents four Virtual Camera choices: Program, Preview, Scene and Source. Preview includes the preparation view, while a fixed Scene or Source remains tied to that chosen object. Use the setting that expresses the presentation policy, rather than whichever choice happened to be active previously.

For example, a stable visual aid can be sent as a fixed scene while the operator prepares another production elsewhere. A produced lesson can follow Program. In either case, put the policy in a short operating note, especially if more than one person uses the computer.

Inspect the receiver through ordinary changes

Start the virtual camera, select it in the receiving app and inspect the rehearsal label there. Then perform a scene change or preview edit that should either appear or remain private under your chosen policy. This deliberate contrast is more informative than looking at one static frame.

Check the receiver’s crop and framing. It may place a camera feed inside a different layout from the OBS canvas. Inspect important text and edges in the receiver’s actual view, not only in OBS. If the image differs, keep the receiver’s selected device and layout with the report.

Finish with a complete presentation check

Test the intended microphone and audio arrangement in the receiving application as its own task. Do not infer a complete meeting setup from a working camera picture. A brief rehearsal with a second participant or a local receiver preview can establish image identity, but a final delivered recording needs inspection separately.

Stop the virtual camera after use when continued output is unnecessary and verify the receiver’s ordinary camera selection before the next session. This guide provides an original operating procedure and does not report a meeting, capture, microphone route or service-account test.

Questions answered

Why can viewers see me editing a scene?

The virtual camera may be following Preview. Inspect its configured output policy and the receiver’s selected camera.

Can one fixed scene be sent independently of Program?

OBS documents a Scene choice for Virtual Camera. Verify the selected scene and the receiver’s result.
