Turn a reviewed Tvheadend guide search into an Autorec rule

Check guide-search membership before creating a repeating Tvheadend recording rule.

Define the repeat-selection requirement

Tvheadend's programme guide offers filters and a route from a search to an Autorec rule. Begin with a plain-language requirement, including channel scope and the kind of event you intend to record. Use a source and programmes you are authorised to record; a guide search does not confer rights or supply a missing channel.

Record the server version and a small expected set: one event that should match, one similar event that should not and any important duration or channel boundary. The guide's information depends on the configured source and broadcaster metadata, so treat missing genre or episode fields as input limitations rather than inventing values.

Build the search from the smallest useful filter

The checked guide describes multiple active filters combining together. Start with one and add the next only after inspecting its effect. A lingering channel or tag filter can narrow results unexpectedly. Conversely, a broad title expression can select more events than the visible first screen suggests.

Inspect full title, channel, start time and relevant programme details for the sample matches. If using full-text search, understand that it can match other descriptive fields as documented, not only the visible title. Use simple, explainable expressions before introducing regular-expression complexity. Do not assume a plausible result count proves the intended membership.

Distinguish one event from a repeating rule

If the requirement is only the selected event, use the single-programme recording route rather than making a broad Autorec. The guide also documents a series action where series-link data exists, and a search-based fallback when it does not. These routes have different inputs and should not be described as interchangeable guarantees of future episode matching.

Before confirming a search-derived Autorec, review the criteria shown in its dialog. Check channel, tags and other boundaries against the written requirement. Keep a record of the active search state so you can explain why the rule was created, including any field whose usefulness depends on guide metadata.

Inspect the ongoing rule and future selections

After creating a local rule, review it in the DVR rule list and inspect the recordings it schedules. Include the known near match in that review. If an unintended event appears, disable or narrow the rule while preserving its previous values, rather than deleting media or adding a second overlapping rule as a guess.

Revisit the rule when channel tags, guide sources or schedules change. No guide query or recording rule was executed for this article. The completed task is a reviewed selection policy with visible future consequences, not a promise that a title search follows every renamed, delayed or incorrectly described programme.

Questions answered

Do multiple active EPG filters broaden a search automatically?

The checked documentation describes combined filtering. Review each active condition and use Reset All when establishing a clean baseline.
