Prepare an identifiable edit pair
A video producer may receive narration separately from the picture edit. VLC desktop's 3.0 guide documents opening a video with another media file synchronously. Start by identifying the exact video revision and narration revision, with permission to use both. A title shared by two files is not enough if their introductions or internal edits differ.
Write a short review sheet with the video duration, audio duration and three meaningful cue points. Choose an early action, a point in the middle and a late action that should correspond to the narration. Preserve the original files and keep other narration revisions out of the first sample folder so the intended comparison is clear.
Attach through the documented media dialog
This procedure follows the VLC desktop 3.0 interface documented with a Media menu. Use it on builds exposing the controls below. The checked article does not establish an equivalent macOS menu route; mobile and television interfaces are also outside this procedure’s scope.
- Choose Media > Open Multiple Files. In the first dialog, use Add to choose the exact video file.
- Enable Show more options, then Play another media synchronously.
- Choose Browse. In the second dialog, use Add to choose the narration file, then Select.
- Choose Play in the original dialog to open the pair.
Confirm the selected narration
Inspect Audio > Audio track after opening. The separate audio should be distinguished from any embedded soundtrack, and the currently selected entry matters. Do not assume that a newly attached file replaces the original soundtrack or that the same numeric track position applies to every video. Record the identity actually displayed on the local installation.
Judge alignment at several cues
Review the early, middle and late cues with the intended track selected. A similar displacement at every point is different from a mismatch that increases or jumps after a particular scene. Before using a player delay, compare whether the audio and picture represent the same edit. A single offset cannot reconstruct a missing introduction or removed section.
Keep observations specific: which cue, what was expected and what was heard. No narration or timing test was performed for this guide, so it does not certify a particular file pair. If you make an adjustment locally, preserve the unadjusted baseline and label the changed playback state so a reviewer can reproduce the comparison.
Distinguish audition from delivery
An audition establishes whether the selected pair is useful for review. It does not automatically create a new video file with the narration embedded. If a colleague needs a portable deliverable, define an export task and check its audio selection, timing and output separately with a documented tool.
Keep the review sheet with file revisions, selected track and any temporary playback adjustment. Reopen the pair during a small local rehearsal before relying on it in a presentation. The finished task is a traceable narration comparison on the intended desktop version, with a clear boundary between player-side choices and an accepted production master.
Questions answered
Does opening external audio overwrite the original video?
This is a playback audition workflow. Do not describe it as an exported replacement soundtrack.
Can the same attachment route be assumed on every VLC platform?
No. This procedure covers desktop 3.0 builds exposing Media > Open Multiple Files. The cited article does not verify an equivalent macOS, mobile or television menu path.
