The live view looks ahead
ATP’s official live-ranking explanation says the live table resets to look ahead to the coming tournament week, removing points earned in the corresponding week 52 weeks earlier. The ordinary published ranking and this live calculation can therefore show different totals at the same moment.
A decrease in the live view need not mean the player has already lost a current match or been penalized. The display is changing which results remain in its rolling calculation. Read its live label before treating a number as the newly published weekly ranking.
A simple replacement calculation
Imagine a player with 3,000 published points, including 500 from the corresponding previous event. A forward-looking view can begin at 2,500 after removing those expiring points. If the new counted result then contributes 300, the simplified total becomes 2,800.
The player earned new points yet still finished 200 below the earlier 3,000. There is no contradiction: 300 replaced 500 rather than being added on top forever. This deliberately simplified example illustrates point defence, not the complete ATP counting rules, mandatory-event requirements or a forecast of any actual player’s position.
Why fewer points can coexist with a higher position
Consider a second original comparison involving two players. A begins on 3,000 and falls to 2,800 in the simplified replacement example. B begins above A on 3,100 but falls to 2,700. A now sits above B despite losing points. Rank measures ordering against other players; it is not a second name for an individual points balance.
This also explains why a live position can move while the player is off court. Other results can change the surrounding totals. The observation is a change in the displayed order; it is not evidence that the absent player has played another match. To explain a movement precisely, identify both the individual balance and the relevant changes around it. This does not require predicting the full list or treating a provisional position as a completed weekly publication.
Questions answered
Does a live points drop prove a match defeat?
No. Expiring points can be removed before new results replace them.
Does gaining points guarantee a better rank?
No. Other players’ totals also determine the order.
