WTA rankings: singles and doubles describe different records

Read a player’s WTA ranking in the correct discipline and distinguish an individual doubles ranking from a team label.

The discipline belongs beside the number

WTA’s official explanation maintains separate singles and doubles ranking calculations over a rolling 52-week period. A ranking number without the discipline can therefore mislead. A player described as world number five in doubles is not necessarily fifth in singles.

Imagine the same player entering a singles match and a doubles match on successive days. A lower singles seeding alongside a high doubles ranking is coherent because the lists summarize different results. The athlete has not been demoted simply because the graphic switched disciplines.

Counting results is not counting every appearance

The current explanation describes different numbers of counted tournaments for singles and doubles. That is another reason not to combine their points into a homemade universal tennis ranking. The points are calculated within their own systems, not pooled across every match the player contests.

For an original illustration, a doubles title can improve the relevant doubles record while a singles first-round exit contributes a different singles result. Adding the two point awards and labelling the sum “world ranking points” would create a total the official lists do not necessarily use.

A player and a partnership are different units

A doubles match has a partnership, while a player’s ranking record follows the individual. WTA’s explanation also addresses equal-ranking treatment where players earned the relevant counted doubles results together. Those details make sense only after identifying which list is being read.

A useful broadcast note therefore states the discipline, the ranking date and whether a label names an individual or the partnership in that event. That resolves many apparent discrepancies without assuming an error in the programme. For an exact entry or seeding calculation, use the current rulebook and event list rather than this simplified explanation.

A partnership change need not erase an individual history

A doubles team for one event is not necessarily the same pair that produced every counted result behind each player’s ranking. When a player partners someone new, a graphic can still show individual doubles ranking information. Do not assume the number was earned exclusively with the partner standing beside them in this match.

For an original note, separate “player A’s doubles position”, “player B’s doubles position” and “this event’s team seed”. The first two belong to individuals; the third belongs to the entered partnership under the event’s seeding procedure. They need not all have the same value. This is a practical way to interpret a new partnership without inventing a combined world-ranking position by adding or averaging the two individual ranks. The organizer’s actual entry or draw record remains the evidence for the team’s seed.

Questions answered

Is a player’s doubles rank also their singles rank?

No. They are separately calculated lists.

Should singles and doubles points simply be added?

No. Use the official calculation for the relevant discipline.
