Twelve places come directly from the pools
EPCR’s current 2026/27 format explanation describes twenty-four clubs in four pools of six. Each club plays four different pool opponents, home or away. The top three in each pool advance directly to the round of 16, supplying twelve places in total.
That leaves four places to complete a sixteen-club knockout field. EPCR awards those to the four remaining clubs with the highest match-points totals across all pools. A fourth-place position within one pool is therefore not, by itself, the whole qualification answer. The cross-pool comparison is part of the announced route.
A local table and a wildcard table serve different purposes
A pool table establishes who occupies its first three automatic places. The wildcard comparison asks which of the other clubs have the strongest relevant totals across the competition. A side can know its pool position while still waiting on another pool’s results for its broader qualification outcome.
Imagine A is fourth in pool one and B fifth in pool two. Do not dismiss B solely because fifth is a larger position number: the published wildcard selection considers match-points totals across pools. The complete applicable ranking rules, not an improvised comparison of ordinal positions, decide the actual result.
The four-match schedule is not a full pool round-robin
A six-club pool would provide five possible opponents per club, yet the cited schedule gives four matches against different opponents. The rules also restrict meetings between clubs from the same league in the pool phase. The pool table should therefore not be described as two complete meetings with every other member.
For an original fixture ledger, create four rows for the club’s confirmed pool games. Do not add a fifth opponent or reverse fixtures simply to make the schedule look like a domestic league. The actual four results, alongside the specified table criteria, are what contribute to the competition’s pool and wildcard calculations.
A wildcard is a sporting qualification place here
The word wildcard can mean a discretionary invitation in other sports. In this EPCR explanation, the round-of-16 wildcard places have a stated results-based selection mechanism. Importing the tennis meaning would misdescribe why a club advances.
The current rules page also distinguishes round-of-16 Champions Cup wildcards from the subsequent places awarded into the Challenge Cup route. Keep those destinations separate when reading a table graphic. A club continuing into a different competition has not taken one of the same sixteen Champions Cup places. Review the actual season’s official table and ranking procedure before calling any provisional place confirmed.
