Competition identity

The first round uses two containers
DFB’s published format starts with a 64-team competition and separates the first-round draw into two containers. One represents the Bundesliga and second-division side of the draw and the other the designated amateur side, with stated status exceptions. The pairing is formed by taking an amateur-side entry and a licensed-side entry; the former receives home advantage.
The word amateur here is part of the competition’s draw classification. It is not a licence to guess a club’s finances or employment arrangements. A second-division label on another website does not by itself resolve which container a promoted or specially classified entrant occupies.
Turn a draw into the right fixture expectation
Suppose an amateur-side entry A is drawn against licensed entry B. The draw establishes A’s home advantage in that tie. It does not create a home leg followed by a return leg at B. A viewer seeing a well-known visiting club at a smaller venue is observing the cup’s draw structure, not necessarily a switched league fixture.
When a later round is drawn from one container, DFB still gives amateur teams home advantage against licensed teams. That is why reading only the order in which familiar badges appear can be misleading. The organizer’s final fixture listing resolves the actual venue arrangement.
Do not confuse the cup with a league round
A Bundesliga round contributes to a season table, while this cup pairing decides who moves forward. Clubs can consequently meet in more than one competition with different venues or stakes. A cup victory does not award Bundesliga table points.
For an archive description, keep the cup round and venue context beside the score. That lets a reader understand why the matchup looks unusual and what the result accomplished. This explanation deliberately leaves individual venue approvals and exceptional fixture arrangements to the published match record rather than inventing a universal stadium promise.
Why home advantage does not establish playing strength
The draw mechanism deliberately creates some meetings between clubs from different levels. Home advantage records which side receives the hosting position; it is not a ranking that says the host is stronger. A smaller club appearing first in the fixture can therefore be fully consistent with the format.
Imagine a broadcast introduces the visitors as favourites while the fixture line places their opponent first. Those two statements describe different things: an assessment of the contest and the assigned home team. Treating the order as a prediction would turn a competition arrangement into an unsupported sporting conclusion.
The same distinction matters after the match. A home-side defeat does not show that the draw procedure failed, and an away-side victory does not turn the cup tie into a league fixture. The result tells who progressed; the draw record tells how the hosting arrangement was established.
If the published match record names a different venue from a club’s familiar stadium, use that confirmed venue. The home-entitlement explanation is not a promise that every tie is physically staged at an unchanged ground. Keeping entitlement and actual venue separate makes the explanation precise without speculating about exceptional arrangements.
Questions answered
Does a first-round tie imply a return leg?
No. Do not invent a second fixture from the two clubs’ names.
Is amateur a casual judgement about a club?
Here it refers to DFB’s draw classification, including its specified exceptions.
