Europa League: how eight opponents come from four pots

A pot supplies opponents

For the 2026/27 Europa League league-phase draw, the 36 clubs are divided into four pots. Each club is drawn against two opponents from each pot: one at home and the other away. A pot is a draw category, not a small group whose members repeatedly play one another. The club’s own pot also supplies opponents.

Imagine a draw ledger with four rows, labelled pots one to four, and two columns, home and away. Filling each cell once gives eight different opponents. That is a useful way to transcribe the draw without inventing return fixtures. If club A visits club B in this phase, a home meeting against B does not automatically follow.

The ranking joins separate fixture lists

All clubs contribute results to one league ranking. The list is shared even though each club has its own selection of opponents. Watching two clubs near one another in the table therefore does not mean they have played a common round-robin schedule.

Suppose two clubs have six points from three matches. Both may have two wins and one defeat, yet their opponents and venues can differ. The shared table compares their accumulated outcomes; it does not imply they have completed the same fixture list or that their next opponent will be the same.

What the draw can and cannot tell you

UEFA’s draw conditions normally prevent opponents from the same association and limit how many opponents come from another single association, with administrative exceptions available. The published draw is the result to follow; the colour of a pot graphic is not a substitute for the actual pairings.

The draw identifies opponents and home or away status. It does not guarantee a match result, a qualification threshold or television access. For the next viewing decision, move from the completed opponent list to the competition’s match records, keeping the league phase separate from its later knockout ties.

Compare the draw ledger before comparing difficulty

A useful comparison starts with the same four-pot ledger for both clubs. Club A and club B each receive two opponents from each pot, but they need not receive the same opponents or the same home/away pairing. Equal representation from the pots is a draw constraint, not proof that their eventual fixtures have identical difficulty.

For example, A can host one pot-one opponent and visit another, while B receives a different pair from that pot. A later table comparing their points summarizes the matches they actually played. It cannot turn those different opponents into a common schedule. Keep judgments about difficulty separate from the regulation’s verifiable allocation.

After the draw, read each club’s completed fixture list horizontally: opponent, home or away, and result when available. Read the competition table vertically to compare accumulated records. Moving between those two views explains how clubs can share a league ranking without participating in a conventional all-play-all league.

A planned return meeting should appear only if a later competition stage actually pairs the clubs again. Reversing the home/away entry in the original ledger creates a fixture the league-phase format does not provide. This is particularly useful when a listing shows the same opponents in an archive from another season.

Questions answered

Does a club avoid opponents in its own pot?
