An available squad is not the starting side
The IPL’s 2026 playing conditions distinguish the registered squad from the match nomination. They call for eleven nominated players and up to five substitute fielders. A large pre-match team graphic can therefore contain more names than the side’s starting eleven without changing the basic team size.
When reading that graphic, first locate its headings. A substitute list answers who has been nominated for that role; it does not say that every listed person has already entered the match. A season squad announcement answers an even broader availability question.
The overseas limit applies to the actual configuration
The cited clauses limit the starting eleven to four overseas players and also restrict the number simultaneously on the field. Replacing one overseas fielder with another is different from adding another overseas player to a fielding side already at its limit.
Imagine a graphic showing four overseas starters and an overseas substitute. Counting five overseas names on the screen does not alone prove a breach. The relevant question is which players are actually fielding together and which player was replaced. A screenshot stripped of the starting/substitute labels removes information needed for that judgement.
Do not merge different replacement mechanisms
The IPL separately confirmed that the Impact Player regulation continues through the 2025–27 cycle. That does not make every substitute-fielding appearance an Impact Player introduction. Different terms in commentary can describe different permissions.
A useful viewing note records the official designation when a replacement is announced instead of inferring it from a new face on screen. This guide decodes the list categories and the cited numerical limits. It does not invent an uncited complete Impact Player procedure, an injury assessment or an individual player’s eligibility ruling. The distinction is enough to avoid treating a season roster as a match participation record.
Read the nomination after the toss
The cited match conditions place the written nomination after the toss. A projected eleven published before that point is therefore different evidence from the formal nominated side. A pre-match graphic can be a prediction, a squad list or the confirmed nomination, depending on its label and timing.
A useful comparison retains both versions without treating them as conflicting official records. For example, a preview may suggest batter A, while the formal team names bowler B. The preview is not automatically a late withdrawal announcement. It may simply have been an editorial expectation before the team made its actual nomination.
The same care applies to overseas totals: count the confirmed starting eleven before evaluating a substitute appearance, and retain the replacement information. The rules describe both nomination and on-field configuration. A bare list of recognizable international players, detached from those categories, cannot establish the match’s actual composition.
