Fifty and ties is not a fixed fifty-player promise
The PGA TOUR’s media guide, updated through 20 April 2026, lists the Masters as seventy-two-hole stroke play with a low-fifty-and-ties cut. The tie provision matters: it does not require separating equal scores merely to force the continuing field to contain exactly fifty players. This is dated tour-document evidence for the 2026 edition.
Imagine an original halfway table with forty-eight players on lower totals and six tied on the next total. Those six occupy the tied position at the cut boundary, so the tie condition includes them together. The example illustrates the meaning of “and ties”; it is not a claim that this was the actual 2026 halfway distribution.
Making the cut does not restart the score
The Masters’ own Sunday pairings PDF includes columns for rounds one, two and three alongside a total. The previous rounds are therefore visible in the final-round starting document. Qualifying to continue and the accumulated tournament score are separate pieces of information.
For an original arithmetic row, rounds of seventy-one, seventy-two and sixty-nine give a starting total of two hundred and twelve before the fourth round. A Sunday score of seventy would then produce two hundred and eighty-two. Do not add the subtotal and its component rounds again: that would count the first three rounds twice.
A pairing is not a match-play score
The official sheet places two golfers beside one another in a starting group. That arrangement identifies who is scheduled together. It does not turn their stroke-play contest into a head-to-head match where beating the partner alone decides the championship. Each golfer’s accumulated total still belongs to the wider field.
Imagine A outscoring playing partner B by one on Sunday while golfer C, in another group, records the lowest final tournament total. A’s better round within the pairing does not by itself establish the championship winner. Pairing, daily score and tournament position are three distinct records.
The document’s date and columns define its scope
The checked Masters PDF is the final-round starting sheet for Sunday, 12 April 2026. Its prior-round totals are not final seventy-two-hole results, because the last round had yet to be added to those columns. A current-looking archive filename should not cause a starting document to be described as the finished leaderboard.
When reading a saved sheet, identify the round heading first, then decide whether the total includes that round or precedes it. This small distinction resolves why the same player can have one total on the pairings sheet and a different total on a completed result. The page explains that document structure without inferring future Masters cut rules or a later edition’s pairings.
Questions answered
Must a low-fifty-and-ties cut leave exactly fifty players?
No. Equal scores at the boundary can leave more than fifty.
Is the total on the Sunday starting sheet already a final score?
The checked sheet totals the first three rounds, before Sunday’s round is added.
