FedExCup 2026: the 70–50–30 progression is not a halfway cut

Separate season qualification, shrinking playoff fields and the result of the TOUR Championship.

Three events, three eligibility thresholds

The PGA TOUR’s 2026 overview describes a progressive playoff field: seventy players for the first event, fifty for the second and thirty for the TOUR Championship. Regular-season points carry into the first two events. The overview separately states that the playoff tournaments have no in-event cuts.

The word cut can therefore be misleading without its context. Reducing the eligible field between tournaments is a season progression. A halfway cut removes players during an individual tournament. These are different operations, so the seventy-to-fifty step should not be interpreted as twenty players leaving the first tournament after its second round.

A tournament finish and a season position can diverge

For an original comparison, imagine golfer A enters an event with a substantial points lead and finishes below golfer B that week. B has the better result in that tournament; A can still occupy the stronger cumulative position if the resulting totals say so. The weekly leaderboard and the season standings rank different quantities.

A personal ledger needs two rows of context rather than one blended “place”: the event finish and the updated FedExCup position. Do not calculate the latter by simply adding finishing positions together. A first place plus a twentieth place is not twenty-one FedExCup points. Use the points recorded under the applicable allocation.

An absent qualifier does not create an automatic replacement

The official overview says the field is shortened if an eligible player cannot or chooses not to play; alternates are not added. This makes the announced field size a maximum under the qualification structure, rather than proof that exactly that many players must tee off regardless of withdrawals.

If an illustrative thirty-player final has one eligible player absent, it is possible for the starting list to contain twenty-nine. The missing place does not, under the cited explanation, automatically transfer to the next person in the season standings. Read a field list as the actual participants and an eligibility list as those who qualified.

The 2026 finale starts from even par

The same current overview describes the TOUR Championship as seventy-two holes of stroke play with all players starting at even par. The best performer across its four rounds wins the FedExCup. An old starting-strokes graphic should therefore not be used to explain the stated 2026 finale.

Consider two hypothetical finalists whose season positions differ. Both begin this finale at the same score under that explanation; the previous position remains qualification context, not an invented head start on the tournament leaderboard. Preserve the year when comparing historical footage because a familiar event name does not guarantee identical scoring across editions.
