QMJHL’s 2026 playoffs: the second round leaves the conference route

Read the 2025/26 QMJHL change from conference first-round pairings to overall-standings matchups.

The change begins after the opening round

The QMJHL’s official 2025/26 season launch states that divisions were abolished and that a new playoff format would begin that season. The first round remained within the East and West conferences, but from the second round the matchups were determined using the regular season’s overall standings.

The important boundary is therefore between rounds one and two. Reading the initial conference grouping as an unbroken route to a conference final would miss the announced change. A team’s opening opponent can follow a conference arrangement without every subsequent opponent being restricted to that same arrangement.

A survivor list needs a fresh comparison

Imagine an original first-round summary showing four surviving clubs from each conference. Before assigning their next opponents, bring the survivors into the competition’s overall regular-season ordering. Their first-round wins establish that they advanced; those wins do not themselves create a new regular-season points total.

This keeps two records separate: the results that qualified a team for the next round, and the pre-existing regular-season standing used to arrange that round. Do not rank the survivors by the size of their latest victory or the number of goals scored in their opening series unless the applicable procedure actually calls for it.

Cross-conference meetings are a feature of the changed route

Under the announcement’s second-round use of overall standings, a familiar conference heading no longer describes the whole possible opponent pool. A series that connects teams associated with different conferences is not automatically a labeling mistake. The bracket’s stage matters to the interpretation.

A helpful archive caption includes the year and round before discussing the pairing: “2026 QMJHL quarter-final” gives the reader a different structural context from “2026 first round”. Avoid shortening both to “conference playoffs” when the official change deliberately moves later matchups to an overall-standings basis.

Do not import another junior league’s path

The OHL separately publishes conference reseeding and a meeting of its conference champions. Sharing the broader Canadian junior-hockey setting does not make the OHL and QMJHL procedures interchangeable. The QMJHL’s named 2025/26 announcement is the evidence for the route explained on this page.

An original comparison sheet should have one row per league and a column called “ordering used after round one”. That specific question reveals the difference without treating all leagues as aliases. It also makes older QMJHL footage easier to discuss: an archive from before a format change needs the procedure from its own edition, rather than a current-looking generic bracket.

This guide intentionally does not predict later-edition pairings or reproduce an unverified 2026/27 full bracket. It completes the narrower task of explaining why the 2026 postseason can leave its opening conference arrangement once the next round is formed.

Questions answered

Did the 2025/26 announcement keep every round within conferences?

No. It moved the second round onward to matchups based on overall regular-season standings.

Should opening-series goal totals replace regular-season standings for reseeding?

The announcement identifies regular-season overall standings, not a new goal-based playoff table.
