Competition identity

Qualification refers to two different trophies
CAF’s announcement published on 3 November 2026 identifies Mamelodi Sundowns as the 2025/26 Champions League winner and USM Alger as the Confederation Cup winner for the 2026 Super Cup meeting. These are distinct qualification achievements, rather than two alternate names for the same continental title.
The Super Cup then awards a separate trophy. A club’s earlier championship explains why it appears in the pairing; it does not count as a goal, a lead or an extra win when the new match begins. The qualification history and the match result belong in separate fields.
Season labels and event editions answer different questions
An archive can truthfully place “2025/26 champions” beside “Super Cup 2026.” The season label describes the qualifying competition; the year identifies the later event. A reader should not change either label simply to make their numbers match.
As an illustration, a note saying “qualified through competition X; then won the Super Cup” records two achievements. Replacing that with “won the continental league twice” would merge separate trophies. Exact competition titles are particularly useful when the same clubs have won several African events over time.
Use the official announcement as a snapshot
The cited CAF article was a pre-event announcement at the research date, not a completed score report. It establishes the pairing and qualification context. It cannot establish a final winner or prove that a particular television subscription carries the match.
For a retrospective record, add the eventual official result when it exists while retaining the qualification explanation. This preserves what was known before kickoff and what was learned afterwards. The same discipline prevents a promotional preview from being silently rewritten as firsthand evidence of a match that has not yet been played.
A club can hold one title and contest another
Calling one participant the Champions League winner describes an existing achievement at the moment of the Super Cup preview. Calling it a Super Cup contender describes the new task. Both labels can apply simultaneously, and the later result does not rewrite which earlier competition provided qualification.
An invented club might lose the Super Cup after winning its qualifying tournament. A season summary should retain both facts instead of saying the club ceased to be the earlier champion. Conversely, a Super Cup victory should not be entered as another Champions League campaign win. Exact trophy names preserve those distinctions.
A useful trophy ledger has separate columns for competition, edition and outcome. The qualifying season belongs in the first trophy’s row; the Super Cup year belongs in its own row. This is clearer than compressing all continental success into an unlabeled count that mixes season-long tournaments and separate deciding matches.
The CAF announcement also shows why a preview should be preserved as a preview. It can explain the eligibility relationship even after a later score report exists. Pair the documents for their separate purposes rather than changing the earlier article’s known-at-the-time claims into a retrospective match narrative.
