Competition identity

Start with the games between the tied clubs
Article 18 of Liga Portugal’s 2026/27 competition regulation begins the completed-table tie-break sequence with points won in matches between the tied clubs, followed by goal difference in those meetings. Overall goal difference comes later. The article number matters when checking a current copy: an older regulation may organize the same topic differently.
Suppose A and B finish level on league points. A won their first meeting and the second was drawn. A collected four head-to-head points and B one. A’s poorer overall goal difference would not overturn the earlier head-to-head separation in this illustration.
Do not jump from one familiar column to the answer
A television table may prominently show goals for, goals against and overall goal difference. Those columns are convenient summaries, but their visibility does not make overall goal difference the first tie-breaker. A mini-table of the tied clubs answers a different question from the full-season totals.
If A and B split their meetings with one victory each, head-to-head points alone do not separate them. The next applicable criterion must be evaluated. Do not describe the pair as permanently inseparable merely because the first criterion tied, and do not skip directly to a neutral-site match before exhausting the regulation’s sequence.
Interim positions need additional care
The current article also deals with classifications during individual rounds, including the situation before both meetings have been played. A table halfway through a season is not simply the final-table procedure with unfinished data silently treated as zero.
When explaining a temporary order, identify that it is interim and use the official current table. When explaining the completed season, assemble the relevant head-to-head results and then move through the published criteria. That method prevents a live graphic, an old PDF and a final ranking from being mixed into one calculation.
More than two tied clubs need the relevant set of matches
With three or more clubs level on points, looking at only the two whose names happen to be adjacent on a graphic can omit part of the tie. The regulation begins by identifying the tied clubs and their results against one another. That relevant set must be established before a mini-table is calculated.
As an original illustration, A beating B does not alone settle a three-club tie that also includes C. A’s and B’s results against C can change their totals within that group. A convenient recent head-to-head clip may therefore be genuine yet insufficient to explain the complete ranking.
A useful worksheet starts by listing every tied club, then only their mutual matches. Once the applicable criterion separates them, follow the published procedure rather than inventing a new order based on reputation, last season’s finish or which club appears first alphabetically in a player app.
If reproducing a final ranking for readers, include the decisive criterion in the explanation. Saying A is above B because of head-to-head points is more informative than presenting the order as self-evident from overall goal difference. It also lets a reader verify the result against the correct current regulation.
Questions answered
Is overall goal difference the first final-table separator?
No. The current regulation starts with head-to-head points.
Does an interim order prove the final order?
No. The regulation explicitly addresses in-season classification separately.
